At Noble Park Primary School we are committed to implementing a school-wide positive behaviour support framework. This is an evidence-based framework for Victorian government schools, aimed at creating a positive, safe and supportive learning culture.
A school-wide positive behaviour support framework helps to ensure teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction. Students and staff benefit from:
Noble Park Primary School has a clearly defined set of expected behaviours.
The School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support team reviewed the interim Matrix of Expectations, which was developed in 2023, to include the school value ‘Be Kind’. The Noble Park Primary School Matrix of Expectations is displayed in different settings across the school and consists of 3 to 5 expected behaviours that apply at all times.
During 2024, the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support team have reviewed the interim Matrix of Expectations with students and staff to ensure it aligns to the Values and Meaning Statements that were developed through a community approach. Kate Littlehales, our SWPBS Team Leader, met with the Values Champions to include them in this process. During a 2-hour session, the Values Champions and school leaders brainstormed statements to reflect how students can demonstrate the Value Be Kind by providing ideas that related to the 3 initial spaces: Classroom, Outdoors and Toilets. This promoted student voice and ownership when refining our Matrix of Expectations. This work was then taken to the staff, who also collaborated to refine the work of the students for’ Be Kind as well as adding Transitions to the Matrix of Expectations.
From here, the SWPBS team will bring together the work of our stakeholders to finalise the updated Matrix of Expectations. Running parallel, a scope and sequence of mini-lessons will be explicitly taught to students so that they know who the expected behaviours look, sound and feel like on a day-to-day basis.
What professional development has the School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support team completed during 2024?
The School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support team has completed the Tier 1 Foundations course which focused on:
What is the Behaviour Response Continuum?
The Behaviour Response Continuum is an important component of the School-Wide Positive Support framework. It is a continuum of procedures that encourages the expected behaviours, linked to the Noble Park Primary School Matrix of Expectations. Explicit teaching of the expected behaviours is implemented through a multi-layered approach and all staff ensure that they are positively and consistently stating and modelling the expected behaviours. As a school-wide system, the Behaviour Response Continuum has been developed through a collaborative approach and provides a framework that supports consistency and predictability for all members of the school community.
How was the Behaviour Response Continuum developed?
The Noble Park Primary School Behaviour Response Continuum was developed through a collaborative approach, and ensures that staff, students, parents and carers have a clear understanding of the specific strategies and responses to Minor and Major behaviours. Central to this continnum is the premise that all members of our school community can expect to be treated with respect and that the identifed Minor and Major behaviors are responded to through a consistent approach. The Noble Park Primary School Behaviour Response Continuum and Matrix of Expecations are displayed througout the school to ensure visibility and a tangible reference point.
